Five to Watch Save the Planet in 2011

Monday, December 27th, 2010

This week we highlight Five to Watch Save the Planet in 2011 – celebrities that caught our eye this year as they got more and more notice for their Green activism around the world.  We thank you – and we are hopeful that you’ll do even more in the coming year and beyond.  Keep up the good work!

Leonardo DiCaprio.  Leo, you’re back!  With your focus on saving the Brazilian rainforest and your film about global warming, you originally you led the pack when it came to Green.  But in recent years Ed, Matt and others took center stage and we heard less about you.  We were sad, but now we’re happy.  This year your  $1m pledge to the World Wildlife Fund to save tigers in Africa and Asia and your meeting with Jairam Ramesh, India’s environmental minister got our attention.  We know you’ll do more on a worldwide scale.  Rainforests, tigers, and global warming all tie together – good job.  And your decision to design and feature TAG Heurer watches  in your movies with funds going to environmental causes is a very nice touch.  Thank you, Leo.

Adrian Grenier.  Adrian, last year we noticed you were breaking in to Green causes but this year you gained solid ground with your Oceana t-shirt and hosting Charity:Water’s annual ball.  Keep it up!  We see you’re committed and want to see more.  We’ll be watching!

Natalie Portman.  Natalie, who knew that of all the Hollywood celebs embracing vegetarian eating that you’d be at the top of our list!  That’s a very crowded field.  But you moved way out in front this year – congratulations.   You seem to know more than others that actions speak louder than words, and you’ve been very vocal this past year.  We noticed that you moved to vegan from vegetarian and as a vegan you lent new meaning to ‘walk the talk’ when as the face of Dior you convinced the design house to make  vegan shoes for you to wear for the brand.   We can’t wait to see what you do next!

Prince William and Kate Middleton.  There’s nothing more exciting than a royal who embraces Green, and it appears we have two making Green choices together.  Over the years we’ve noticed that Prince William loves natural and remote places, especially mountains.  So, we were pleased to see that he proposed to Kate Middleton in a Kenyan log cabin with no electricity.   With talk about a Green wedding dress and the possibility of living in an eco mansion all that’s left is serving local and organic food at the wedding!  Congratulations on your choices and we wish you all the best in the years to come!

Michelle Obama.  Michelle, we really admire you.  It’s not easy to be First Lady, and you’ve done a great job with your relaxed, friendly, confident style and your focus on healthy eating for children.  From planting a garden at the White House, a vegetarian menu for your first State Dinner, and your recent program to encourage greener eating habits for children at elementary schools you are helping our planet in a way that goes beyond politics.  Keep up the good work – we are behind you all the way!

That’s our lineup of celebrities to watch in 2011 for their Green – and good – works.  We can’t wait to see what they do in the coming year!  All the best as we each try to save our planet in 2011.  Happy New Year!

Our ‘Five Celebrities to Watch Save the Planet in 2010′ – How Did They Do?

Our ‘Five Celebrities to Watch Save the Planet in 2010’ – How Did They Do?

At the end of last year we highlighted Five Celebrities to Watch Save the Planet in 2010 – celebrities who were just starting to be recognized for their eco activism.  Before we present our list of Celebrities to Watch for 2011, let’s check on the past activities of those we recognized last year.  We’re proud to say that our celebs really used 2010 to expand their activities further.  We are in awe of what they achieved during the year.  Two need more of a push than the others although we are proud of them and wish them the best for 2011.  See what you think!

Shakira.  Wow – what you’ve done is amazing and we can’t wait to see what you do next as you soar higher and higher.  Shakira, you spent the whole year moving forward with your message of help to children by providing the opportunity of a good education, and including environmental education and policies as an integral part of what they are taught.  You are not afraid to tell a world leader exactly what you think, and we applaud you!  Thank you especially for your work in Haiti.  We noticed that you were honored by the United Nations in March 2010 for your work as a UN Ambassador.  We were thrilled to see you partner with celebrities and world leaders to focus attention on the United Nation’s Millenium Development Goals Your dedication shows and we wish you all the best success.  We don’t think anything will stand in your way, and everyone will benefit.

Leilani Munter.  Leilani, you really pulled it all together this year to promote a green(er) lifestyle to a group that’s not necessarily at the front line of living green – NASCAR fans.  With your ‘GreenTeam’ behind you at the races promoting LED lighting, encouraging the racing industry to consider alternative fuels, and your choice to be a vegetarian we all get the chance to see a green lifestyle in action as you put the pedal to the metal.  You’ve made strides off the racetrack as well.  Congratulations on being recognized by the Huffington Post as a ‘Creative Mind’.  You are definitely influencing others by your actions.  Keep up the great work!

Jet Li. Jet, you didn’t do as much as we hoped in 2010 but we are behind you 100% and we hope to see more.  We know you faced challenges with the ONE Foundation in your home country and we’re keeping our fingers ‘crossed’ that things will work out!  Do what you need to do to get back on track and we’ll check in during 2011.  We know you are committed and we look forward to great things.

Rachelle Carson Begley.  Rachelle, we see that you laid some groundwork in 2010 with organizations that focus on children, teens and the environment.  Keep it up – we like where you’re headed.   With your sensible, humorous approach to saving the planet at home we know you can influence many as you continue to Live with Ed.  We have high hopes and look forward to continue seeing you in the green spotlight.

Prince Albert II of Monaco.  He’s been called The Green Prince, and he’s really doing it right.  Albert, we had no idea and we feel that you’re just hitting your stride.  You are an awesome royal.  This year, you went beyond the work of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation to go globetrotting, fiancée in tow, to reach out to leaders and influentials all over the world.   Japan, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US were just a few of the places you traveled to talk about the importance of leaders working together to recognize environmental dangers and save our planet.   Albert, keep doing your great work in your quiet, determined style.  Your voice is being heard in royal chambers and executive offices everywhere!

So that’s a snippet of what our ‘Five to Watch Save the Planet in 2010’ did during 2010 – a year of hard work, success, and continuing to set an example and encourage others to take part.   We wish you all the best in your efforts for the coming year.

Watch for our next post on celebrities to watch save the planet in the coming year. We’ve got a pair of well known movie star hunks and a starlet who’s really come into her own,  a young royal couple and a First Lady who has really made a difference for our planet in the past year.  We think you’ll really enjoy our ‘Five to Watch Save the Planet in 2011’!

Miss America’s Green Star – Miss DC 2009 Jennifer Corey

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Jennifer Corey at her Miss America Send-Off by Vithaya

We’re thrilled to see the Miss America Organization embrace Green in their Green is Gorgeous campaign, and glad to see that we can vote for the Greenest Miss America contestant.  Welcome.  We’re glad to have you aboard.  But we’re the most thrilled that the Greenest Contestant is in our own backyard. Jennifer Corey, Miss DC 2009 – beauty, brains, talent and recycling.  Thank you, Jennifer – we’re proud and glad that you’re representing our nation’s capital.  And we’ll be rooting for you on January 30.

Last night we caught up with Jennifer Corey at her Miss America Send-Off party sponsored by the Miss DC organization.  A crowd was there to wish her well on January 30, and Jenn took the time to talk with KissMyCountry about her commitment to recycling.  “It’s really the easiest way to be Green”, Jenn said.  We couldn’t agree more.

It’s really great to see recycling as a platform for a Miss America contestant.  Her platform – ‘Let’s Talk Trash’ – is a standout, and she’ll reach millions.  Nice job, Jennifer.  We like your style.  ‘Let’s Talk Trash’ promotes recycling in DC, including the Federal Government, the Capital and the White House, and stricter recycling laws.  She’s working with Goodwill Greater Washington to encourage people to buy recycled furniture and clothing – she’s decorated her own apartment with ‘finds’ and her favorite style is Hollywood glamour for furniture, 50’s vintage for clothes.

Jennifer’s been committed to recycling for a long time, and her passion stems from her family.  Her grandfather built a garbage and recycling business run by her father and uncles today – so she knows what she’s talking about.  We couldn’t ask for a better champion for Green given all of her energy, intelligence and talent.  Keep in mind that she’s not only a cum laude graduate of American University, but she’s in the Placido Domingo Apprentice Program at the Washington National Opera.  Quite a combo.  You can’t help but love a woman who stands on stage in an evening gown singing and then with equal emotion talks about reusing furniture and clothes from second hand stores.  How lucky are we?

So Jen – and we hope we can call you Jen – thank you and you’ve given us a reason to tune in on pageant night.  We know you’ll wow the judges and we can’t wait to watch.

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Last week we highlighted five celebrities whose eco activism saved the planet during 2009 – Mylie Cyrus, Ashley Judd, Ed Begley Jr., Edward Norton and Matt Damon.  This week we highlight Five To Watch Save The Planet In 2010.  Our five celebrities include a Grammy winning sensation from Columbia, a NASCAR driver, a Chinese martial artist and film star, a Hollywood beauty, and the head of a European royal family.   Enjoy – we look forward to hearing from them in 2010!

Shakira.  Shakira, you remind us that when you save a child, you save the world.  Education is the great equalizer and educated, healthy children grow up to save our planet.  It’s a profound message, and your work for the ALAS Foundation and UNICEF reminds us there’s work to do.  When you talk to world leaders, Shakira, we are in awe.  Your message – and determination – is clear; who can resist?  As you move from the music stage to the world stage we see great things for you.  Keep singing and keep showing your love.

Leilani Munter.  Leilani, our NASCAR racing Carbon Free Girl.  A vegetarian, a degree in biology, donating an acre of rainforest for each race, blogging for Huffington Post – you do it all.  What a year and we know this is the tip of the iceberg!  Thank you for showing how to balance the Green – and less Green – parts of our lives.  We know there’s much, much more to come.  All the best and we’ll be watching.  Start your engines.

Jet Li.  Beijing born, talented and famous  in martial arts, your One Foundation focuses on China.  Supporting grass roots efforts, knowing the power of many improves lives everywhere, we wish you great success in your home country.   Thank you for thinking Green and working with Tony Blair to promote solar lighting for remote villages in China, India and Africa.  Connecting the world while reducing greenhouse emissions – we really like your style!  Thank you for what you’ve done, and please do more.

Rachelle Carson Begley.  Rachelle’s husband, Ed, may play the title role on Living With Ed, but Rachelle’s the one to watch.  Gracious, gorgeous, dedicated to style and beauty, Rachelle’s taught us all how to live Green without going overboard, and knowing when to seek a moderate – and stylish – solution to a household challenge.  We know it hasn’t been easy; you’ve done a great job.  In her own right, Rachelle is the reigning queen of green fashion and green decorating in Hollywood.  Could ‘Living With Rachelle’ be in the works for Planet Green?  We certainly hope so.  Rachelle, we think 2010 is your year  – go for it.

Prince Albert II of Monaco.  For this modest royal, actions speak louder than words.  The first head of state to reach the North Pole, Prince Albert loves the outdoors and this year set sustainable practices in place in Monaco.  That’s a use of power and authority we can respect.  Albert’s competed in 5 Olympics on Monaco’s bobsled team, explored the Russian Arctic, and is passionate about ocean conservation – the Mediterranean Sea’s outside his front door!  The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation focuses on climate change, biodiversity and water management.    Prince Albert II, you’ve done a lot, and we know you won’t stop.  Thank you and let them eat local!

5 Celebrities Who Saved The Planet In 2009

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Leo, move over.  A new crop of celebrities is doing their part to save our planet and sites like Ecorazzi keep us well informed.  Here we highlight five celebs who stayed firmly in the Green limelight during 2009 as they spoke out, stepped up and drew attention.  We’ve got a teen, a true lady, a Boomer and two hunks.  Here’s who they are and what they did this year to save the places we love.

Mylie Cyrus.  Mylie, you set the tone for a whole generation when you swapped your mom’s car for the Prius from your dad  – and talked about doing good for the environment and living a Greener lifestyle.  We hope you still enjoy your car and your Hello Kitty floor mats, and continue to think Green.  Safe driving.

Ashley Judd.  Ashley, nobody else supports conservation with such beauty, grace and strength.  Thank you for your courage and your style.  You gave us a double dose of Green this year when you spoke against mountaintop removal with The Sierra Club and the aerial killing of wolves with Defenders of Wildlife.   You showed your love for America’s lands and America’s wildlife, and we love you.  Please say more, and often.

Ed Begley, Jr. Ed, this year you were everywhere – awards ceremonies, conferences, web sites, and events, events,  events.  But you did your best work on Living With Ed – making your home the Greenest on the block, visiting celebrities, and driving Rachelle – and Bill Nye – crazy.  We’re glad you’ve got your day inthe sun; thanks for staying the course and showing us all how to be an Eco Activist.

Ed Norton.  Ed, what you did this year was amazing.  First, Earth Hour, then judging the Green Effect .   But the best was running in the 2009 New York City marathon with Maasai warriors no less and raising over $1 million for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.  Nice use of Twitter to raise even more money to protect East African grasslands.  We’re breathless and in awe, and can’t wait to see your next move.

Matt Damon. Matt, you remind us that saving the planet is also about saving people – especially children and families.  Your work with Water.org  for clean water around the world is significant, and builds on the support you’ve shown for OneXOne.  Thanks for lending your voice so firmly to clean water – and thanks also for your PSA for the US State Department about climate change and world hunger.  Keep it flowing.

Mylie, Ashley, Ed, Ed and Matt – thank you for all you’ve done this year and for all you’re going to do in years to come.  Next week we’ll reveal our picks for celebrity up and comers in our post on ‘5 Celebrities to Watch in 2010’.
